What is Godly Play?

Children have an innate sense of the presence of God. The Godly Play approach helps them to explore their faith through story, to gain religious language and to enhance their spiritual experience though wonder and play. Based on Montessori principles and developed using a spiral curriculum, the Godly Play method serves children through early, middle and late childhood and beyond. Come join us!

CINDY SPENCER has been teaching Godly Play since 1992 in a variety of settings, and has been a Godly Play trainer since 2002. She was the Coordinator for Children and Family Ministries at Saint Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle from 2002-2015, developing, supporting and maintaining four Godly Play classrooms for children age 3 through 5th grade. From 2013-15 she also served on the Bishop’s Staff of the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia, supporting congregations as they developed their ministries with children and families.  Her interests include equipping families to pass on their faith at home and ministering to and with children with special needs and their families.  She earned an M.Div. from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1994, and has three Godly Play raised children who are now in high school and college.

Maundy Thursday
April 2
7:00pm Worship Service with Holy Communion
Maundy Thursday is from the Latin word “maundatum” which means mandate. This service focuses on the loving commandments Jesus gives us to serve one another (as Jesus took on the role of servant, washing the feet of the disciples) and the gift of the Last Supper, the instructions Jesus left with followers to “do this in remembrance of me….”
Good Friday 12:00pm Brief Order of Tenebrae, Sanctuary
April 3 5:45-8:15pm Good Friday Prayer Stations, Fireside Room/Gathering Space.
Participants may spend five minutes or two hours interacting with the different stations as they choose. The various stations will guide people to reflect on the events that took place on this Holy Day and on our relationship with God. The design is intentionally appropriate for children of all ages from 1 to 100. Children and Youth are encouraged to visit the Prayer Stations wit a family member.
6:00pm Prayers Around the Cross, Luther Hall
This reflective worship around the cross offers time for Taizé style music, scripture and candlelight prayers.
7:00pm Full Order of Tenebrae, Sanctuary
This Service of Shadows is a combination of scripture lessons and extinguishing of candles symbolic of Jesus’ journey to the cross. Special music weaves throughout this Good Friday worship.
